The House Education Committee Tuesday heard the good, the bad, and the ugly about the state’s new divisive concepts law.
A new law that prohibits teaching one race is inherently superior or inferior to another has no place in state statutes, a senate committee was told Tuesday.
The state’s new “divisive concepts” law is being challenged in federal court, arguing it is too vague and unconstitutional.
Democrats said it would increase property taxes, invade a woman’s privacy, and prevent teaching about racism while failing to pay for the social services desperately needed as the state’s residents come out of the pandemic, like homelessness.
CONCORD – State police were called to the State House Thursday after hundreds of pro-choice activists, public education supporters, disability rights groups, and climate change activists entered the building following an outdoor rally and demanded Gov. Chris Sununu veto the budget.
It was the 111th press conference held related to the pandemic and it came 458 days after his declaring a state of emergency on March 16.
The “divisive concepts” education language now in a budget bill is expected to be amended by Republican leadership Wednesday, but there is no “Racism Lite” language that will be welcome by at least two state senators.
More than 220 people signed up to speak during a virtual Senate public hearing about the proposed next two-year state budget, House Bill 1 and House Bill 2, with callers urging full funding for services for people with developmental disabilities, Medicaid adult dental benefits, school funding, and more.
