What People Say About Us…

“Who does New Hampshire want to have its back when the next hare-brained, get-rich-quick, cockeyed, scenery-trashing, money-grubbing scheme threatens New Hampshire’s greatest legacy---it landscape? Well, I’ll want the reporters and editors at InDepthNH.org---the only news medium that staffed the critical Northern Pass hearings, from beginning to end. InDepthNH.org---good, solid, statewide news coverage, the kind you can depend on, the way things used to be and the way they should.”
John Harrigan, writer
Colebrook

"We desperately need investigative news organizations like InDepthNH to counter the fake Facebook postings and toxic partisan diatribe masquerading as the truth. I’m immensely grateful to InDepthNH for the invaluable work they do."
Gloria Norris
Filmmaker, author of KooKooland

“New Hampshire owes a debt of gratitude to IndepthNH.org for its investigative journalism covering government accountability issues. It has been a pleasure teaming up with them to enhance government transparency and accountability in the Granite State.”
Gilles Bissonnette
ACLU-NH Legal Director

"The arrival of InDepthNH.org has been a game changer. It has filled the void of providing investigative journalism in New Hampshire. InDepthNH.org has provided ethical, quality journalism on issues that impact the lives of New Hampshire citizens daily. In addition to giving a voice and a platform to those who would otherwise be voiceless."

  • Parents Spar in Testimony over Bill on ‘Parental Alienation’

By KATHARINE WEBSTER, InDepthNH.org Divorced parents and step-parents recounted personal horror stories Tuesday during testimony on a Republican-sponsored bill that makes “parental alienation” as important as child abuse in family court cases involving divorce and child custody. House Bill 1323 defines parental alienation as “a pattern of behavior, conduct, or speech that would damage the relationship of the child and a parent, resulting in the child’s fear, negative perception, rejection, or hostility toward their other parent,” including making disparaging remarks, “manipulating” or “coercing” the child and interfering with the other parent’s custodial time.

  • Preventing County and State Owned Land To Be Used for Carbon Capture Debated

By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.orgCONCORD - Propelled by a change in historic timber cutting practices in the state brought on by the advent of carbon sequestration, a bill that would prohibit state- and county-owned lands from participating in such programs was heard Tuesday before the House Municipal and County Government Committee.Sponsored by state Rep. Arnold Davis, R-Berlin, House Bill 1205 would prohibit state- and county-owned land from participating in carbon sequestration projects. The state has about a dozen private tracts of land registered in carbon programs totaling fewer than 200,000 acres and mostly in Coos County.

  • Speaking of Words: What Would We Do Without Do?

Speaking of WordsBy MICHAEL FERBER             One of the many features of English that makes it weird compared to other European languages, and even to its West Germanic cousins, is its extravagant use of the word do.  In German, it is true, its counterpart tun can be deployed in many similar ways: Er hat nichts zu tun, for example, means He has nothing to do, and Es sollte regnen, und das tat es means It was supposed to rain, and it did.  These are instances of tun and do as both primary and auxiliary verbs.  But English parts company with German, Dutch, and the other West Germanic languages in turning do into an all-purpose auxiliary.  It must strike foreigners as very strange when they try to learn English as an adult, for they won’t have met anything quite like it anywhere else.             The Oxford English Dictionary lists 101 meanings in its entry for the verb do, fifteen of which are labelled “obsolete,” and most of them are uses as main or primary verbs.  Its oldest meaning, now obsolete, was “put” or “place”; its root and meaning can be traced all the way back to Proto-Indo-European.  Just about all that remains of that sense today is the pair don and doff, themselves archaic though still familiar in some contexts.  Don is from do on, and doff is from do off.  When we don our gay apparel at Christmas, we put it on, when we doff our hats to the ladies we put them, or take them, off.

John MacDonald, R-Wolfeboro Falls is the prime sponsor.

Jesus Moore, 36, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante to 121 months in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release.
