As Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1816, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” In sum, he believed that a nation could not long exist both ignorant and free.
I grew up in a middle-class town of 18,000 people north of Boston. My Dad, who had two chemistry degrees from Boston College, taught science at the local high school and my Mom, whose family couldn’t afford the nursing degree she wanted, worked in an office in the neighboring town.
I urge Governor Ayotte on behalf of all of us and any state official
willing to join her to issue a long delayed, public, and sincere apology to those longago kids that our state abused. Maybe real healing could actually begin if she did.
Had enough? Aren’t you just emotionally exhausted? Maybe we really have unwittingly become two countries: Red and Blue.
It is shameful what has happened in our names; in fact, it is beyond shameful. The silence of people who knew better allowed the YDC scandal to go on for five decades.
