Here you will find stories about the North Country. Just writing those words, though, I sense a fight coming. When I lived in Bethlehem, I could unequivocally state that I lived in the North Country, but things got muddy when I moved to North Conway. You see some folks believe the North Country includes only communities north of the state’s four notches: Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, Pinkham Notch, and Dixville Notch.
For InDepthNH.org’s purposes, we’ll use a little common sense and maybe stretch that a little farther south. And get ready for a call from our columnist John Harrigan, who has been called the King of The North Country, when we get it wrong.

Nancy West | CONCORD – Questions about possible health risks to the elderly residents of Sherburne Woods in Deerfield from Northern Pass’s electromagnetic field took center stage Wednesday on Day 5 of hearings that will determine the fate of the proposed 192-mile transmission line from Pittsburg to Deerfield.
LANCASTER – Developer Les Otten said he has spent about $7.1 million on his effort to redevelop the Balsams Resort, the project is moving ahead and some construction could occur this summer.
The fourth day of hearings on the $1.6 billion, 192-mile transmission project to bring 1,090 megawatts of Hydro-Quebec electricity from Canada through New Hampshire to the New England grid saw counsel for the public spar with a Northern Pass witness over health effects from exposure to electromagnetic fields.

From Northern Pass’s inception through December 2016, Eversource has invested $190.5 million in development costs for Northern Pass including about $50 million for land purchases, Eversource’s Kenneth Bowes told regulators.

CONCORD — Many opponents of the Northern Pass project want the entire 192 miles of transmission line between Canada and Deerfield buried, but on Friday landowners said a decision two years ago to increase the buried portion to 60 miles was ill-conceived and based on political pressure rather than a thorough study.
Nancy West | CONCORD — Eversource Energy researched what it would cost to bury the entire 192-mile Northern Pass transmission line proposed from Pittsburg to Deerfield, but decided the extra $1 billion price tag was just too much, according to William Quinlan, Eversource’s president of New Hampshire Operations.
A petition signed by nearly 90 small and local businesses from throughout New Hampshire calling for full burial of the proposed Northern Pass project has been delivered to Governor Sununu and New Hampshire’s Site Evaluation Committee.
U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will visit River Valley Community College to discuss the Northern Border Regional Commission’s importance to Northern New Hampshire at the Lebanon Academic Center at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
