  • House Votes New Requirements for Absentee Voting

    By GARRY RAYNO, InDepthNH.org CONCORD — The House made it more difficult to vote by absentee ballot passing several bills that will require more information to vote in absentia Thursday. The House also failed to change the state’s primary election day from September to June, and decided cities and towns have to purge their voter checklists yearly instead of once in a decade.

  • Education Freedom Accounts Expanded by House 

    By GARRY RAYNO, InDepthNH.org CONCORD — The House once again voted to expand the Education Freedom Account program, opening it to any New Hampshire child regardless of his or her parents’ income. In an often contentious debate, Senate Bill 295 passed the House on a 190-178 vote and is expected — if it becomes law — to increase the state’s obligation by tens of millions of dollars over the next biennium while many state social services will be cut due to declining state revenues.

  • NH Senate Passes $15.7 Billion Budget Without Support from Democrats

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org CONCORD - Refusing to bend to any of the amendments brought by Democrats, the Republican-controlled Senate passed a $15.7 billion budget Thursday which is bound to head to negotiations with the House of Representatives. The Democrats hammered on the fact that among all these cuts Republicans were willing to spend $30 million on Education Freedom Accounts, which eliminates any financial threshold.

  • Identical Parental Rights Bills on Way to Governor for Her Expected Signature

    By GARRY RAYNO,and PAULA TRACY CONCORD - Two identical parental rights bills are headed to the governor for her expected signature after votes in the House and Senate Thursday. Republicans finally got the measure over the threshold after four years of trying but Democrats were opposed and outnumbered.
