Op-Ed: Downshifting is just another way to say property tax increase

By Cathy Ann Stacey and Margaret ML Byrnes | April 24, 2025

By downshifting costs to counties and municipalities, the House proposal risks devastating many services that our communities rely on, while also burdening local governments and taxpayers who can ill-afford any additional financial strain.

Op-Ed: Do NH Voters Really Want One-Size-Fits-All Zoning Mandates?

By Margaret ML Byrnes | March 31, 2025

With multiple polls showing housing as the top issue in New Hampshire by a wide margin, it’s no shock that the current legislative session is awash with proposals ostensibly aimed at addressing the state’s housing crisis.

What People Say About Us…

“Who does New Hampshire want to have its back when the next hare-brained, get-rich-quick, cockeyed, scenery-trashing, money-grubbing scheme threatens New Hampshire’s greatest legacy---it landscape? Well, I’ll want the reporters and editors at InDepthNH.org---the only news medium that staffed the critical Northern Pass hearings, from beginning to end. InDepthNH.org---good, solid, statewide news coverage, the kind you can depend on, the way things used to be and the way they should.”
John Harrigan, writer
Colebrook

"We desperately need investigative news organizations like InDepthNH to counter the fake Facebook postings and toxic partisan diatribe masquerading as the truth. I’m immensely grateful to InDepthNH for the invaluable work they do."
Gloria Norris
Filmmaker, author of KooKooland

“New Hampshire owes a debt of gratitude to IndepthNH.org for its investigative journalism covering government accountability issues. It has been a pleasure teaming up with them to enhance government transparency and accountability in the Granite State.”
Gilles Bissonnette
ACLU-NH Legal Director

"The arrival of InDepthNH.org has been a game changer. It has filled the void of providing investigative journalism in New Hampshire. InDepthNH.org has provided ethical, quality journalism on issues that impact the lives of New Hampshire citizens daily. In addition to giving a voice and a platform to those who would otherwise be voiceless."

  • Student Workers On Strike at Dartmouth

By Arnie Alpert, Active with the Activists Arnie Alpert spent decades as a community organizer/educator in NH movements for social justice and peace.  Officially retired since 2020, he keeps his hands (and feet) in the activist world while writing about past and present social movements. Arnie Alpert HANOVER---At 7:32 a.m. Monday morning, the Student Worker Collective at Dartmouth (SWCD) announced by email that it was going on strike at campus dining locations and residence halls.   Within 30 minutes, they were setting up a picket line and a “strike kitchen” outside Novack Café, a popular dining area and coffee shop located on the ground floor of the Baker Library, a central location on the Hanover campus.  SWCD formed as an independent union in 2022 to represent undergraduate students employed in Dartmouth’s dining services.  Last year they organized another unit, representing Undergraduate Advisors, known at Dartmouth as UGAs and on most other campuses as Resident Advisors.  They won a $21/hour base wage and a grievance procedure in 2023 after threatening to go on strike, and according to the union, they also raised the campus minimum wage to $16.25.  As the campus came to life, SWCD members taped signs on doors saying “SWCD ON STRIKE.

  • Meeting with Hampton Officials and Ayotte About I-95 Rest Areas Called ‘Productive’

By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org HAMPTON - Calling the meeting "productive," Executive Councilor Janet Stevens, R-Rye, said the governor and her top staff met last week with Hampton town officials to discuss the future of the Hampton rest area/welcome centers. Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte surprised many two weeks ago when she pulled the sale of the two properties from consideration and said she believes a lease option is better for the state and that the properties on Interstate 95 north and south are too important to not control the messaging and what is sold.

  • ‘North Woods Law’ Creators Seek New Contract With State For Show About Fish and Game

By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org CONCORD - The creators of the reality hit show "North Woods Law" have a new contract to film Fish and Game Conservation officers in New Hampshire before the state Executive Council on Wednesday. But rather than show how they wrangle with wildlife, sneak up on poachers and rescue injured hikers on the cable channel Animal Planet, Engel Entertainment wants to offer a similar product online.

  • Helen Hanks Is Out as Corrections Commissioner

By DAMIEN FISHER, InDepthNH.org Department of Corrections Commissioner Helen Hanks resigned suddenly on Monday, and seemingly against her will, after months of controversy over the way she treats staff. “I am writing to share that I will be stepping down as Commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections.

  • Formella Joins Effort Opposing Prohibiting States from Enforcing Artificial Intelligence Regulations

Concord, NH - Attorney General John M. Formella is part of a bipartisan coalition of 40 state attorneys general that has sent a letter to Congress voicing opposition to a sweeping amendment to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee's budget reconciliation bill. The amendment would impose a 10-year prohibition on states from enforcing any laws or regulations addressing artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making systems. “AI promises immense potential for progress, but it also brings significant risks that must be addressed responsibly,” said Attorney General Formella.
