Op-Ed: Let’s Stop Calling Medical Aid In Dying Suicide

The New Hampshire legislature is considering a bill to join our Maine and Vermont neighbors to allow New Hampshire residents with a terminal illness, in consultation with two medical providers, the option of ending their suffering and having a peaceful death.

Arnie Alpert CONCORD---The sky was already dark when people began to gather by the Franklin Pierce statue in front of the State House in downtown Concord Wednesday evening.  Jessica Goff passed out electric candles while another volunteer set up 30 jars on the granite step, placing a candle in each and a small card with a portrait and a description leaning against the front.   Each jar represented a transgender person who had been murdered in the past year.

Bradley Asbury, 70, is charged with being an accomplice in the brutal rape of former YDC resident Michael Gilpatrick in 1998 when Gilpatrick was 14.

  • Bill Threatening Nonprofit Organizations Passes; Kuster, Pappas Opposed

    By NANCY WEST, InDepthNH.org The U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday 219-184 to pass controversial H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, with both of New Hampshire’s Congressmen opposing the bill. H.R. 9495 empowers the Treasury Secretary to strip the nonprofit status of tax-exempt organizations if the Treasury Secretary determines that organization provides material support for terrorism, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster, D-N.H. Kuster is concerned that the vague criteria could enable the Trump Administration to retaliate against nonprofit organizations whose perspectives or activities he disagrees with, according to her spokesman.

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org WASHINGTON - New Hampshire's lakes, mountains and seashores are not just pretty, they are places to hike, ski, boat, swim and big money makers for the state, according to a new national analysis. An annual report by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis https://www.bea.gov/data/special-topics/outdoor-recreation shows outdoor recreation added $3.9 billion to New Hampshire’s 2023 economy and the Granite State is among the top 10 whose recreational value adds greatly to the state Gross Domestic Product.

  • Citing Overwhelming Public Comment, Panel Objects to Landfill Rule Changes for Now

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org CONCORD - After receiving hundreds of pages of documents and concerns about future landfill siting, a state committee has temporarily rejected proposed solid waste rules and asked the Department of Environmental Services to come back in December with revisions and explanations for how these changes are an improvement. Opponents feel they don't go far enough to protect the land and people from migrating liquid and potentially toxic leachate, including PFAS.
