    By Coos County Commissioners New Hampshire’s yield tax on timber, often called the “timber tax,” was established in 1949 and has been locally collected to offset property taxes ever since.     By Arnie Alpert, Active with the Activists Arnie Alpert spent decades as a community organizer/educator in NH movements for social justice and peace.  Officially retired since 2020, he keeps his hands (and feet) in the activist world while writing about past and present social movements. Arnie Alpert CONCORD---It was another rowdy afternoon in downtown Concord, where hundreds of protesters took to the street to protest President Donald Trump and celebrate International Women’s Day.  Participants chanted with purpose, waved their mostly homemade signs at passing motorists, and cheered when drivers honked or gave them thumbs up.  Despite a chilly wind and a small band of counter-protesters, the crowd maintained high spirits throughout the afternoon, happy to be in public with like-minded people standing up to a firehose of Trumpist initiatives.    Athena Philibert, from Manchester, was standing near the corner of Park Street wielding a sign that said, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fundamental Human Rights.”  The other side said, “Nevertheless, she persisted,” and Philbert said she had another in her bag that said, “Love like Jesus.”  “I work in early childhood education, and I think it's really important that we shape the world we have our kids growing up into,” she told me.  “I'm not sure the current climate's where I want them to live their lives out.

Arnie Alpert CONCORD---When Dave Boucher, a Transportation Safety Officer at Manchester Airport since 2002, received the first Office of Personnel Management memo telling him to produce a list of five accomplishments within about 48 hours, he considered the order badly thought out.  For one thing, TSOs who were on vacation or other leave wouldn’t even get the memo until they returned.

  • Education Freedom Account Program Projected to Grow to 12,000 Students in Two Years

    By GARRY RAYNO, InDepthNH.org CONCORD — The Education Freedom Account program would increase about 50 percent in the second year of the next biennium if the parent salary cap is eliminated, according to the person administering the program. Speaking to Division II of the House Finance Committee Friday, Kate Baker Demers, executive director of the Children’s Scholarship Fund NH, said her projections are the program would grow to 8,000 student in the first year of the next biennium from the current enrollment of 5,884 and then to 12,000 students if the salary cap at 350 percent of federal poverty limit is removed.
