Spofford’s Defamation Lawsuit Against NHPR on Hold Because the Judge Is On Leave

The defamation lawsuit Eric Spofford filed against New Hampshire Public Radio in Rockingham Superior Court is on hold for now because the judge is on leave, but the reason for Judge Daniel St. Hilaire’s absence has not been made public.

Attorneys for Eric Spofford and New Hampshire Public Radio continue to spar over a judge’s order requiring interviews and documents supporting last year’s story that Spofford claims defamed him be turned over to the judge for private review.

The lawyer for NHPR, two of its reporters and an editor has asked the judge in the defamation lawsuit against them to vacate or modify his order requiring they turn over interviews and other documents for a story last year about Eric Spofford for the judge’s review because of new developments in the case.

Rockingham Superior Court Judge Daniel I. St. Hilaire dismissed Eric Spofford’s lawsuit on April 17, but gave him 30 days to amend his complaint to focus on allegations of actual malice on the part of NHPR.

    Lebanon, NH –Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for Americans ages 15 to 24, and nearly 20 percent of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. That number is even higher among LGBTQIA+ young people, as nearly 47 percent of whom report having had suicidal thoughts, according to a 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Chris Sununu said he had a meeting with the prospective buyer of the former Laconia State School property recently and has "no question" that the $21.5 million sale will close but there is a delay due to title considerations of about a month and relocation of a snowmobile trail on the property. Robynne Alexander is principal of Legacy at Laconia LLC, and she has an ambitious plan to redevelop the property, though it has been pared down by about a third from its initial plan for up to 1,900 units, a spokesman for her said this week.
