This column will explore the recreational and wellness opportunities for individuals with disabilities throughout New Hampshire. We’ll begin with a look at adaptive alpine skiing: the equipment used, the challenges faced by athletes learning to ski, and an overview of a day in an adaptive ski program.

Bill Cobb is a year-round volunteer with and serves on the Communications Committee of Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country. He resides in Littleton.

The mission of Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country is to ensure the enrichment of the quality of life for people with disabilities through year-round sport, recreation, and wellness. Their goal is to enhance the personal development and self-esteem of participants, and to provide an opportunity to take risks in a safe and supportive environment. Their core belief is that, for a person with a disability, the opportunity to experience the thrill of accomplishment can be a life-affirming experience.   • Rep. Weyler Says No To Recusing Himself From YDC Settlement Fund Matters

    By NANCY WEST, InDepthNH.org CONCORD – Rep. Ken Weyler, chairman of the House Finance Committee, said he won’t recuse himself from matters pertaining to the YDC settlement fund after House Democratic Leader Alexis Simpson and some Republicans criticized him for derogatory remarks he made about YDC victims last week at a House Finance Division 1 hearing. Weyler, R-Kingston, mocked victims saying they are just looking for a big payday during the hearing last Wednesday.

  • U.S. Rep. Goodlander Demands Answers About Musk Access to SBA Systems

    Washington, D.C. – Representative Maggie Goodlander, a Member of the House Small Business Committee, sent a letter to Small Business Administration (SBA) Acting Administrator Everett Woodel, urging the agency to immediately clarify the extent of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to SBA systems.  The letter follows reports that DOGE requested and has been granted access to all SBA systems, including HR, contract, and payment systems.  In the letter, Goodlander and her fellow lawmakers highlight the potential threat posed by the Trump administration to critical SBA programs, the agency’s vast network of lenders and resource partners, and the private small business data held by the SBA.  The Members wrote, in part: “After last week’s attempt to freeze federal grants and loans, we are concerned that Musk’s followers intend to block critical SBA services from reaching our nation’s small employers. Unauthorized access to SBA’s systems hurts not just small employers but also SBA’s vast network of lenders and resource partners and will have a disastrous effect on the services provided to small businesses.

  • Speaking of Words: Humorous English

    Speaking of WordsBy MICHAEL FERBER        If my title leads you to hope this column is about amusing things in English, such as funny words like “hornswoggle” and “discombobulate,” I’m afraid I’ll disappoint you.  Words like those I may take up in a future column, but in this one I want to talk about “humor” in the original sense, that is, any of the four humors of ancient medicine and the traces they have left in English, starting with “humor” itself.  These traces give us another example of the way languages preserve cultural fossils, like “horsepower” and “salary,” but in this case it is a whole system of ideas that few people still remember and fewer still believe in.        “Humor” by itself today can be a category of movie or book, and to have “a sense of humor” is to laugh readily at certain situations or perhaps to tell good jokes.  But we also have the phrase “good humor,” which means something like “good mood,” and we have “ill humor” and “bad humor,” like “bad mood.”  So “humor” must have meant something broader than laughter or jokes, something like “temperament.”  In Shakespeare we find such phrases as “her mad and headstrong humor” (The Taming of the Shrew), while his contemporary playwright Ben Jonson wrote a play called Every Man in his Humour.         The word goes back to Latin humor, more often spelled umor, and it meant “fluid” or “juice.”  It is akin to humidus, whence our word “humid.”  It translates a Greek word, chymos, which meant “juice” or “sap,” related to a verb that meant “pour.”  According to the famous physician Hippocrates there are four humors, that is, four fluids that can be found in all human beings.  They should be in balance; no humor should predominate over the others.

  • Let the People Decide No-Excuse Absentee Voting, Bill’s Sponsor Says

    By GARRY RAYNO, InDepthNH.org CONCORD — Let the people decide if they want no-excuse absentee ballot voting instead of legislators, the bill’s sponsor told a House Committee Tuesday. Rep. Connie Lane, D-Concord, told the House Election Law Committee that 37 other states, controlled by both parties, issue absentee ballots to voters without having to state a reason.

  • Cell Phone Ban in Public School Supported in NH Senate Committee Hearing

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.orgCONCORD - Cell phone usage could be curtailed in public classrooms in New Hampshire under a bill that went before the Senate Education Committee Tuesday. It got support from the state's two major teachers' unions and the NH School Boards Association.
