  • NH State Police Allegedly Withheld Evidence in Rape Case

    By DAMIEN FISHER, InDepthNH.org A Massachusetts police officer sentenced to prison for rape could get a new trial as information emerges that New Hampshire State Police officials may have sat on evidence that undermines the credibility of a key witness. Former MBTA Officer Shawn McCarthy is seeking a new trial after he was convicted last year of sexually assaulting two women during a 2012 incident that took place in Boston.

  • Human Rights Commission is Only 43 Percent Staffed, Audit Finds    

    By KATHARINE WEBSTER, InDepthNH.org A newly released audit found that more than half of the staff positions at the state Commission for Human Rights are unfilled leading to long delays in investigations of complaints about discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and K-12 education. The audit by the Office of the Legislative Budget Assistant found that the agency “was inefficient and ineffective in investigating complaints and closing cases in a timely manner.” Only nine of 21 staff positions are filled, leaving investigators to do administrative work while cases languish, according to the audit, released online a week ago and presented to the Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee on Friday.

    (DURHAM, February 21, 2025) - The Tilton Rams beat the Gilford Golden Eagles on Granite State Challenge in Round One, 250-40. The Gilford High included team captain and 12th grader Ben Wolpin, along with Clark Blackwelder and Andrew Gately who are both 12th graders and 11th grader Landon Akerstrom.

  • Op-Ed: The Hidden Hypocrisies of New Hampshire’s School Voucher Laws

    By Gerald M. Zelin Two bills pending in the New Hampshire legislature, House Bill 115 and Senate Bill 295, propose to amend New Hampshire’s current school voucher law, RSA 194-F.  The law offers public money to help defray tuition, transportation, technology, books and other expenses when parents enroll their children in private schools, religious schools, online schools, home-based programs, or public schools located outside the district where the family resides.   Vouchers are currently available only to families whose annual household income is under 350 percent of the federal poverty guideline.  That threshold, currently $109,000 for a family of four, is somewhat less than New Hampshire’s median household income, which was $88,000 in 2024.  Importantly, this income limit applies only when a student first enrolls in the EFA program.
