  • Shaheen Seeks Explanation for Homeland Security’s Erroneous Emails to Ukrainians

    (Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem yesterday seeking answers following reports that Ukrainians on humanitarian parole in the United States had received threatening emails from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that their humanitarian parole status had been terminated and that they had seven days to depart the country.   The Senators wrote, in part: “Even if this message was sent in error, threatening the abrupt termination of humanitarian parole for Ukrainians is alarming and adverse to the U.S. national interest.

  • No Opposition To Bill Requiring Cell Phone Limit Policies in Schools

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org CONCORD - Bills that would allow parents to transfer their children to other schools within the same district, one that would study creating a county school district and one requiring public schools to adopt policies to limit the use of cell phones by students in classrooms across the state were all heard Monday in the House without opposition.  The three public hearings were among a handful handled by the House Education Policy and Administration Committee that have all passed through the upper chamber. CELL PHONES Senate Bill 206-FN, which would require school districts to adopt cell phone policies, passed on a voice vote in the Senate and is one favored by Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte.

    By PAULA TRACY, InDepthNH.org CONCORD - The state's entire congressional delegation - four Democrats - are joining Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte in trying to restore $80 million in federal mental health and substance abuse treatment funds which were expected in the state, now leading to layoffs. "Our state government, communities and health providers were using those dollars daily to address the urgent needs of Granite Staters, including for treating mental health and substance use disorders," the joint letter to Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. drafted Monday reads.

    ARNIE ALPERT photo Concord Crowd Demands End to Trump Agenda By Arnie Alpert, Active with the Activists Arnie Alpert Arnie Alpert spent decades as a community organizer/educator in NH movements for social justice and peace.  Officially retired since 2020, he keeps his hands (and feet) in the activist world while writing about past and present social movements. CONCORD---The largest crowd yet of anti-Trump protesters met up at the State House Saturday for a rally coordinated with about a thousand other rallies nationwide, including fifteen others in New Hampshire from Colebrook to Plaistow and Portsmouth to Keene.  With hundreds already there when the event was scheduled to begin at noon, the area from the State House steps to the Main Street sidewalk was soon filled with sign-holding members of the anti-Trump resistance, mostly united in their demands for an end to the administration’s assault on immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and federal programs aiding veterans, people with disabilities, and pretty much everyone who isn’t a billionaire.  Several speakers also tied the agenda advanced by Trump and Republican members of Congress to the policies advanced by Republicans inside the New Hampshire State House, where Representatives will vote next week on the state’s two-year budget.  “Hands Off!” was the theme nationwide.  National organizers, representing a coalition of about 200 national and local organizations, said interest grew in recent weeks as the administration further gutted worker rights, imposed policies expected to raise prices, closed Social Security offices, and took away funding for other popular programs.  Like other recent actions, many participants brought home-made signs employing humor to poke at President Trump, Elon Musk, and tariffs on faraway locales that export nothing to the United States.  “I’ve seen smarter cabinets at IKEA,” one sign read.  Others were more straightforward, like “Hands off!!!
