Marine Patrol Believes Woman Fell Through Ice and Drowned

UPDATE: Authorities identified woman on Sunday.

At approximately 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, the body of an adult female, identified as Emer Mezzetti, 56, of Atkinson, was recovered from Big Island Pond in the area of Osprey Road in Hampstead.

Investigators have determined Mezzetti drowned after falling through the ice around 6 p.m. yesterday. First responders from various communities attempted rescue efforts but were ultimately unsuccessful. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Dive Team made the recovery this morning.

ATKINSON, N.H. – The New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol is assisting in the search for an adult female at Big Island Pond in Atkinson.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, first responders were called to Chase Island Road in Atkinson for reports of someone yelling for help.

 Based on the preliminary investigation, Marine Patrol officers believe the victim fell through the ice and likely drowned. At this time, the victim has not yet been located and recovery efforts remain ongoing. The search has been suspended until daylight hours.

Marine Patrol officers, along with members of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Atkinson Police Department, Atkinson Fire Department, Hampstead Police Department, Hampstead Fire Department, Derry Police Department, Derry Fire Department, PrideStar EMS, Plaistow Fire/Rescue and EMS and Salem Fire Department responded.
