NH Inmate On Escape Status Fatally Shot By Miami Beach Police During Hostage Taking

A minimum security New Hampshire State Prison for Men inmate who walked away for the Calumet House transitional unit in Manchester a week ago was shot and killed by Miami Beach, Fla., police on Thursday, according to a Department of Corrections news release.

Darien Young, 29, was placed on escape status on July 21 after he failed to return to the Calumet House.

Young was identified as a suspect stealing at a Victoria Secret retail store in Miami Beach Thursday evening and when Miami Beach Police arrived was threatening two individuals at knife point.

 An officer discharged his firearm, striking Young. There were no other injuries reported, the release said.

 Young was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died. Young’s next of kin have been notified.  

Young was incarcerated in New Hampshire for receiving stolen property (2 counts), controlled drug acts prohibited, burglary, and falsifying physical evidence, with a minimum parole eligibility date of July 31, 2023, and a maximum release date of January 31, 2028.
