Attorney General John M. Formella released Tuesday the identity of the police officer who discharged his firearm during a shooting incident May 21 in Milan, in which Zachary Gagne, 37, was injured.

The officer who discharged his firearm during the incident was Berlin Police Corporal Jason Silva, according to the news release Tuesday from Formella’s office. Corporal Silva has been a law enforcement officer for the City of Berlin for almost 5 years, the release said.

The initial news release after the incident said Berlin police officers were responding to a resident’s request to remove a man from the home at 256 West Milan Road in Milan at 8:50 p.m. that night.

“As officers arrived, the male, Zachary Gagne, 37, approached the officers with a knife outside the home. During the officers’ interaction with Mr. Gagne, gunshots were fired by one of the responding officers,” the previous release said.

The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation.  No further updates are expected until the investigation is completed.

“Officers were wearing body worn cameras at the time of the event, and that footage is being reviewed by investigators,” the earlier release said.
