MEREDITH, N.H. – One man is dead and an investigation is underway in a blaze at 164 Old Center Harbor Road in Meredith, according to the state State Fire Marshal’s Office and Meredith police.
At this time, investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious, according to a news release from the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
At 6:46 p.m. Wednesday, the Meredith Police Department responded to 164 Old Center Harbor Road for a welfare check. When they arrived at the home and made entry, officers requested the Meredith Fire Department after they saw smoke and found an unresponsive man on the first floor of the home, the release said.
Firefighters located a small fire in the basement of the home and quickly extinguished it. The man, who hasn’t been identified was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending an autopsy scheduled at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Investigators with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office are leading the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire. Members of the Meredith fire and police departments assisted investigators at the scene.
No firefighters were injured during this incident. Members of the Center Harbor Fire Department and Stewart’s Ambulance Service also provided assistance at the scene.
