Manchester is under a wind advisory and temperatures over the next four days are not expected to
reach above the freezing mark, with wind chills making it feel much colder.
If people are outdoors, it is recommended that they
- Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing instead of just one layer of heavy
clothing. - Wear a warm hat. Up to 50% of your body heat can be lost through an uncovered head.
- Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs.
- Keep dry.
In your home, please remember that heating equipment is a leading cause of fire in New Hampshire.
But there are ways to minimize the threat.
New Hampshire’s fire marshal recommends - Keeping anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment
- Turn portable heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.
- Do not to use an oven to heat their home
- Never use generators indoors. It’s also a good idea to check your fire alarms and carbon
monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly.
The National Weather Service recommends wrapping pipes with insulation and sealing windows to
keep heat indoors. If your pipes are located in a cabinet, it helps to open the cabinet doors to allow
warm air to reach the pipe. Keeping a slow stream of water running through your faucets can also
help keep pipes from freezing.
PETS:
Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If
left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t
leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold
and cause animals to freeze to death.
