Update at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1:
Concord, NH – Attorney General John M. Formella and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall announce an update on the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning in a residence off of Route 4 in Northwood, New Hampshire.
At approximately 5:17am on October 1, 2024, a Northwood Police Officer responded to 534 First New Hampshire Turnpike in Northwood for a report of domestic violence between Malcolm Burns (age 34) and his father. When the Northwood Police Officer arrived, he went inside the residence to respond to the call for service, during which time a physical altercation between the officer and Mr. Burns occurred. During this altercation, the officer used deadly force and fired at Mr. Burns. Mr. Burns was struck by this gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An autopsy of Mr. Burns has been scheduled for October 2, 2024.
The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries. There is no threat to the public at this time.
The investigation by the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit into the officer-involved shooting of Mr. Burns is ongoing, and the identity of the officer using deadly-force will not be disclosed until a formal interview takes place.
Further information is not anticipated until after the autopsy is completed.

Concord, NH – Attorney General John M. Formella announces that members of the Attorney General’s Office are responding to a report of an officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning in Northwood, New Hampshire with an adult male fatally shot at a residence along Route 4.
The identity of that individual is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy will be scheduled by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Police responded to the area following a disturbance call. One law enforcement officer was injured in the incident. There is no known threat to the public at this time.
Pursuant to protocol, the name of the officer involved in the incident is being withheld pending the conclusion of a formal interview.
The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation.
