The FBI is investigating a possible assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump Sunday at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The FBI news release included one sentence: “The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach, Florida, and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.”
The New York Times reported that the Secret Service opened fire on an armed man in the bushes a few hundred yards from Trump.
“The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and was taken into custody during a traffic stop, and a rifle with a scope was recovered from the bushes, along with a camera and two backpacks. It was not yet clear whether the suspect had fired any shots, according to the Secret Service,” the Times reported.
New Hampshire Senate President Jeb Bradley, R-Wolfeboro, said in a news release: “Karen and I are grateful to hear that President Trump has survived a second assassination attempt. We extend our appreciation to law enforcement for protecting the President from today’s violence. We are keeping the President and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, who recently won the Republican primary to run for governor, made a brief comment on Twitter.
“Political violence has no place in our country — period. Joe and I are praying for President Trump and are thankful that this heinous attempt on his life failed,” Ayotte said
Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who didn’t back Trump in the primary, but has said he will vote for him, didn’t appear to have any public comment on Sunday.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running against Trump in the presidential election, said:
“I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today. As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence.
“I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden said, our Administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission,” Harris said.
The first attempt on Trump’s life happened about two months ago when his ear was grazed by a bullet during a July 13 outdoor rally in Butler, Pa.
On his fundraising website, Trump posted: “I am Donald J. Trump. FEAR NOT! I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”
