NHDES Beach Inspection Program tests for the presence of fecal bacteria in the waters of public freshwater and coastal beaches throughout New Hampshire. To help inform the public of potentially unsafe swimming conditions, NHDES will issue an advisory when bacteria levels exceed the state criteria.
This newsletter provides weekly updates on advisories that have been issued or removed. For current advisories, visit the NHDES Healthy Swimming Mapper, where you can also find the latest on cyanobacteria warnings.
As a reminder, the NHDES Beach Inspection Program does not sample at every public beach. Some beaches are sampled by other agencies, towns, or by private beach-owners. The NHDES Healthy Swimming Mapper shows only beaches that NHDES samples and will list the frequency of which the beaches are sampled.
No beach is sampled everyday, so advisories do not provide a daily protection. Please be cautious when swimming in any natural waterbody as pathogenic organisms may be present and avoid swallowing or consuming water at any public beach.
