Nancy West, founder of InDepthNH.org We need real ethical news more than ever.

Dear Friends,

We are celebrating Independence Day marveling at the fact that we have been able to report and publish more than 10,000 independent, unbiased stories and columns that matter to New Hampshire since we launched in 2015.

We have a special reason to celebrate, too, by having a fundraiser that will match your donation dollar for dollar up to the first $5,000 starting July 1. This is because of the generosity of Don Burns who started the Katy Burns Local Journalism Fund with the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation in Katy’s honor.

Don Burns, who serves on our board of directors, has provided this $5,000 as a match for this fundraiser and I hope you will take advantage of it.

Katy Burns was well-known for her many years as a columnist for the Concord Monitor. She died Nov. 22, 2023.

Katy’s obituary spelled out the reason we are so pleased with the opportunity to start this new fundraiser.

“She was an elegant writer who was unafraid to take on controversial topics or to annoy (and even outrage) elected officials and, inevitably, some readers. But she was also an insightful observer of every imaginable part of the local and national scene.”

It was her fantastic writing and her fearlessness that brought her a great deal of admiration.

The reason we ask for your donations often is because you – our readers – are really the financial backbone of InDepthNH.org.

Your generosity and a few grants have kept us not only afloat, but kept us growing so we now have contract reporters like Paula Tracy, Garry Rayno and Damien Fisher and me along with columnists Susan Dromey Heeter, Arnie Alpert and Michael Davidow.

During the 4th of July week, I plan on telling the story of InDepthNH.org, how we started with a zero budget in 2015 and last year raised $186,000. It is amazing how we have grown. Will tell you all about it.

Sometimes I think we don’t blow our own horn enough. Please feel free to ask questions about InDepthNH.org and I will make sure they get answered during the coming weeks. Thanks for everything. Nancy West
