Gwen Whitbeck, 74, of Mason, NH, passed away on July 30, 2023 in Nashua. Born Gwen Logan on June 4, 1949, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she moved to the United States with her parents and was naturalized at an early age. She attended Rivier College in Nashua. Through the years, Gwen was employed by Wang Laboratories, Digital Equipment Company, and BNZ Materials in various positions of management, customer service, and finance. In 1999 she moved to Mason with her husband, Douglas Whitbeck.
Gwen was passionately concerned for the health of both the environment and our democracy. She used her exceptional organizational and planning skills in the service of both.
She served on the board of the Merrimack River Watershed Council for over 25 years, each year organizing their series of up to 40 canoe/kayak trips. For a while she operated her own small business, a white water rafting company.
Gwen was a founding member of 350NH, and a leader in the fight against the proposed Kinder Morgan Northeast Energy Direct (NED) pipeline. She coordinated many events to support her advocacy, including a concert with Tom Rush to raise funds for the Stop NED campaign. She worked with a number of groups to oppose such projects in other regions.
She served on the Hillsborough County Democratic Committee for many years. As a member of the Mason/Brookline Democratic Committee, she organized a “Diversity Unites Us” fundraising dinner, featuring food from around the world. Local immigrants were invited to describe their experiences as immigrants to the U.S.
Gwen loved small dogs, cats, day lilies, and the music of Joan Baez. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Douglas Whitbeck, and her brother, Ronald Logan, Jr.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
