CONCORD – Republicans on the House Education Committee voted not to recommend HB 1680 for further legislation. The bill follows a year-long effort by the school funding commission to study the effects of the state’s school funding scheme and recommend solutions. Following the vote, Ranking Member on the House Education Committee Rep. Mel Myler, D-Contoocook, released the following statement:

“We are disappointed but not surprised that elected Republicans continue to deny that school funding in New Hampshire is broken. The department of education’s own data reveals what families across the state already know, that the current school funding formula is unfair for students and taxpayers and has contributed to disparities in student outcomes.”

Deputy Ranking Member on the House Education Committee Rep. Dave Luneau (D-Hopkinton) added:

“Voters ask us what the legislature is doing about property taxes and about school funding. Democrats understand this and that’s why we have already filed this legislation for the upcoming session. It is good for students, good for families, good for our economy, and good for taxpayers. HB 1680 represents a good faith effort to close student opportunity gaps without the need for new taxes.”

ON BACKGROUND:

  • Two lawsuits have been filed in the state superior court to challenge the constitutionality of the state’s school funding formula.
