Portsmouth, N.H. and Nashua, N.H. – Following the charges brought against Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison this afternoon in Kentucky, stemming from the death of Breonna Taylor, Black Lives Matter Nashua and Seacoast gave the following statements.
From Jordan Thompson, Director of Black Lives Matter Nashua and the ACLU of New Hampshire’s Racial Justice Organizer:
“There is no such thing as justice for a woman who was murdered by law enforcement as she slept. Breonna Taylor should still be alive today. Every officer involved in her murder should be charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; anything less falls short of real accountability. Our Black Lives Matter chapters in New Hampshire stand in solidarity with Breonna’s family, her loved ones, and her community.
“This criminal legal system was built to fail people like Breonna. There is no amount of reform that can rectify the damage that has been caused by police violence in our country. We must continue to demand immediate action from our elected officials and others in positions of power to dismantle these systems of oppression wherever they exist.”
From Tanisha Johnson and Clifton West Jr., Co-Founders of Black Lives Matter Seacoast:
“This is why the movement must continue. This is why we fight. These laws that have been created to insulate officers from criminal prosecution, justified the MURDER of Breonna Taylor today. We can’t allow it any longer. We must take a stand to use our collective power to demand changes in the laws that allowed for the killers of Breonna Taylor to not be held accountable for her murder.”
