The New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, which publishes InDepthNH.org, has been selected by the editors of New Hampshire Magazine as “Best of NH 2016 for Nonprofit News.”
In the July issue of New Hampshire Magazine, the editors explain why they selected the statewide, online investigative news outlet:
“With the decline of print journalism, you might joke that every daily paper lately performs as a nonprofit news outlet, but that wouldn’t be funny.
“And the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism is very serious about its effort to generate valuable local news and investigative journalism in a publicly supported model.
“Led by veteran reporter Nancy West, the source has already become a staple of news browsers for other for-profit journals. Now, if they can just raise the monthly support they need to continue and grow, that will really be news. indepthnh.org”
West said she is thrilled that the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism and the folks who work so hard to keep InDepthNH.org updated and relevant every day, have been recognized with this awesome award.
The center is working hard, West said, to attract tax-deductible donations and corporate underwriters such as Northeast Delta Dental, which was and remains an early supporter, to continue its work. Public support is critical, she said.
“We are proud to be selected for the Best of NH 2016 edition. It means we have really arrived and that people are reading the stories and listening to the podcasts we produce every day,” West said.
“In the past few months, we have written about people with mental illness being housed in prison even though they haven’t committed a crime, and about serious medical errors in New Hampshire hospitals,” West said. “InDepthNH.org recently became the first news outlet in New Hampshire to cover a confidential involuntary commitment hearing in Probate Court.”
Her goal is to support the other news outlets in the state, a number of which already publish InDepthNH.org stories, West said.
Every year, in addition to the results of the online Readers’ Poll, the New Hampshire Magazine editors choose their favorite restaurants, shops, people, musicians, events and more to appear in the Best of NH July issue.
“These selections represent our favorite things about the state that we think our readers need to visit and know about,” the editors said.
West said she would be remiss if she didn’t name the people who put their heart and soul into the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism: Roger Wood, director of audio and video; Web guru Montana West; Editorial cartoonist Mike Marland; editor and consultant Bob Charest; writers John Harrigan, Christine Schadler, Monica Drahonovsky, and Sarah Freeman-Woolpert.
All of the Best of NH 2016 winners will be celebrated Thursday, June 16 at Manchester’s Northeast Delta Dental Stadium from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the event’s ticket sales will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank, a program of New Hampshire Catholic Charities.
“We’re very excited about returning to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, home of the Fisher Cats,” said New Hampshire Magazine Editor Rick Broussard. “What says summer better than being in a ballpark? You can stroll along the concourse and sample the fare of more than 60 restaurants and retailers, all of them Best of NH winners. And the evening ends with a not-to-miss fireworks display.”
There will also be prizes. One lucky partygoer will have the chance to win an all-inclusive week’s vacation for four at Squam Lake provided by Rockyworld Deephaven Camps.
