DURHAM, NH – Majorities in all six New England states oppose recent attacks on Iran by the United States and most believe President Trump should have asked for Congressional approval before conducting the strikes.

However, many believe that the Iranian nuclear program represented a serious threat to the United States before the conflict began. New Englanders are divided on the decision to assassinate Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but generally oppose similar assassinations of political figures during armed conflicts.

These findings are based on the March 2026 Breaking News Survey fielded under the States of Opinion Project, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Panel members in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut were sent an invitation to complete the survey and 6,266 completed the survey online between March 2 and March 4, 2025.
