An armed person was shot by a Border Patrol agent at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning near the Pittsburg N.H. border, according to a statement released by Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Rodney Scott.
The person, who is receiving treatment at an unnamed hospital, wasn’t identified and the release didn’t say whether it was a man or woman.
“In the early morning hours of February 22, a Border Patrol Agent discharged his weapon during an encounter with an armed subject near the Pittsburgh (sic), New Hampshire port of entry.
“Initial reports indicate that the subject opened fire on the agent at which time the agent returned fire. The agent was uninjured. The subject was hit, received medical attention, and transported to the hospital where the subject is currently receiving treatment. The FBI Boston Field Office will be investigating the incident. CBP is cooperating fully with investigators. For more information, we refer you to the FBI,” the release from Rodney Scott said.
A separate release issued by the FBI said: “The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Hampshire are investigating an incident that occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. on February 22, 2026 in Pittsburg, New Hampshire involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent and a subject. The subject allegedly fired at the agent, the agent returned fire, striking the subject who is now receiving medical attention at an area hospital. The federal agent was not injured. The FBI’s Evidence Response Team is collecting all relevant evidence from the scene. As this is an ongoing matter, no further information will be released at this time.”
Ryan Brissette, public affairs spokesman for US Customs and Broder Protection in New England, said an agent attempted to stop the vehicle but it took off before the port of entry. The agent met up again with the vehicle near the Pittsburg port of entry.
Deputy Attorney General James Boffetti said New Hampshire authorities and his office are not involved in the investigation. He said federal investigators are providing information if needed, but his office is not releasing any information because it is not involved in the investigation.
House Majority Leader Jason Osborne (R-Auburn) released the following statement after yesterday’s officer-involved shooting near the U.S.–Canadian border.
“The men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection stand on the front lines every day, confronting real danger so our communities don’t have to and so we don’t have to see the same mobs and mayhem other states and cities are experiencing. They operate in volatile, unpredictable environments with professionalism and restraint. They deserve gratitude, and the benefit of the doubt, not reflexive suspicion fueled by half brained headlines and Democrat talking points.”
“New Hampshire is not insulated from the corrosive effects of sensationalism and “fake news” that too often turns public opinion against those sworn to protect us. We will not prejudge this incident. We will allow the investigation to run its course. We will never let New Hampshire become Massachusetts or Minnesota. I know I am grateful, today and everyday, for the men and women in all branches of law enforcement that keep our state the safest in the nation.”
