BERLIN – By just 14 votes, Berlin voters selected Republican Marc Tremblay over Corinne Cascadden, a Democrat, as their state Representative in a special election Tuesday that could still be recounted.

Cascadden, the former state Representative and former Superintendent of Berlin Schools, received 864 votes but Tremblay received 878, according to the Berlin Town Clerk’s office Wednesday morning.
Cascadden has until 5 p.m. Thursday to seek a recount from the Secretary of State.

The special election was called to fill the post left vacant by the resignation of Brian Valerino who was tapped to be warden of the state prison in Berlin.

Valerino is a retired Coos County sheriff and prison warden. His likely successor, Tremblay, comes with a police background as well. He was a former police commissioner in Berlin.
