LITTLETON – Attorney General John Formella is investigating whether the man who shot and killed Eric Rexford, 38, in Littleton Monday night did so in self-defense, but didn’t release the name of the alleged shooter.

Earlier Tuesday, an autopsy was conducted on Mr. Rexford, who died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death was deemed a homicide.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, according to a news release issued by Attorney General Formella.

“Investigators are continuing to investigate the sequence of events from Mr. Rexford chasing a motor vehicle in Littleton up and until the shooting, but there are no indications of any specific threat to the general public at this time.  This investigation includes whether the person who shot Mr. Rexford acted in self-defense,” the release said.

An earlier release said at 11 p.m. Monday, a call to 911 asked for assistance from a motorist.

“The caller indicated he was being chased in his car; his car had been repeatedly struck, and he was driving through the streets trying to get away from the attacking car. Police were dispatched to find the ongoing pursuit.

“A few minutes into the call, gunshots could be heard. Police officers found the cars stopped after an apparent collision in the vicinity of 33 Pleasant Street, Littleton. Once there, they found the caller, an adult male, waiting for police, and a second adult male suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. The caller identified the injured person as the one who had been chasing and striking his car. The injured male was transported to a local hospital where he later died,” the release said.

Investigators have learned that both men knew each other.
