Nancy Sununu, Former NH First Lady and Governor’s Mother, Dies After Battling Alzheimer’s

HAMPTON – Former New Hampshire First Lady Nancy H. Sununu, mother of current governor, Chris Sununu, has died.

Nancy H. Sununu will be remembered as a strong political partner to her husband, John Sununu, and the mother to both a U.S. Senator and Governor among her large brood.

Gov. Sununu posted on X formerly Twitter that after a long battle with Alzheimer’s: “We said goodbye to mom today. An amazing life of accomplishments, she piloted our family through every day. Huge ‘Thank You’ to the amazing staff at Cornerstone at Hampton. They made all the difference through mom’s toughest times.”

Senate President Jeb Bradley, R-Wolfeboro, who made the announcement Saturday morning, said: “New Hampshire lost a great leader.

“Nancy Sununu served the Granite State as First Lady and Chair of the Republican Party and instilled the love and dedication for our state in her eight children. She will be dearly missed.”

She was born in Dartmouth, Mass., “whose journey of life gracefully concluded on September 7, 2024 at the age of 85,” her obituary reads.

“Nancy touched countless lives with warmth and kindness, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever echo in hearts.”

She was predeceased by: her parents, Edward Hayes and Eleanor Christie Hayes; and her sisters, Joanna Creney and Sally Christie. She is survived by her husband Governor John H. Sununu; and her children, Catherine, Elizabeth, Christina, John, Michael, James, Christopher and Peter.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home (811 Lafayette Rd, Hampton, NH 03842). A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 13th at 10:00 AM at the Saint Theresa Parish (815 Central Rd, Rye, NH 03871).
