The man shot to death by police had killed his wife and son before he was confronted by police early Thursday morning on the Piscataqua River Bridge on the state line between Maine and New Hampshire, authorities said Friday.
The incident had started at about 3 a.m. Thursday when police responded to an apartment at 359 Monadnock Street in Troy in response to a call from Trent Weston, 37, reporting that he shot his wife, Brittany Weston, where police found her body.
An autopsy showed Mrs. Weston died from multiple gunshots to her head, according to a news release from Attorney General John Formella.
Members of both New Hampshire and Maine law enforcement later engaged with Mr. Weston on the I-95 Piscataqua River Bridge, which after hours of negotiation, ended with Mr. Weston being fatally shot. The Maine Attorney General’s Office and Maine State Police continue to investigate that officer-involved shooting.
After the police-involved shooting, law enforcement discovered the body of the Westons’ son, Benson Weston, 8, in his father’s vehicle.
An autopsy of Benson Weston was conducted by the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s that determined the child died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his manner of death was homicide. An autopsy was also conducted of Trent Weston and the Maine OCME determined that his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and his manner of death was homicide.
“At this time, all evidence indicates that Mr. Weston is responsible for the deaths of both Brittany and Benson Weston. Further information will be provided if and when it becomes available while protecting the integrity of the investigation,” according to the news release.
