New Hampshire people stepped up big time to help homeless youths facing frigid cold temperatures, according to Kat Strange, communications director for Waypoint NH.
Strange said Waypoint estimates by end of the day Friday about 900 people came through the doors with donations including Manchester and Rocester sites with about 4,000 items after she put out the alert that the need was there because of the frigid temperatures.
“Hundreds of youths will benefit,” Strange said.
Waypoint has a 14-bed shelter for young people but it is at capacity.
“As you know, beyond this cold snap, people are out there all winter/all year long fighting to survive. We are working so hard to help them and to prevent and end homelessness in New Hampshire.
“Meanwhile, at least we can provide another layer of protection to help people to survive. The outpouring of compassion and support that’s come in from Granite Staters is truly amazing. It reinforces your faith in humanity,” Strange said.
She said the items were sent to youth resource centers and a youth shelter where young people can access them, “and we share with our partnering nonprofits serving those struggling with homelessness.
“While this was a rapid response request, things came in, got sorted, and went out the door as quickly as we could in order to get them to where needed,” she said.
The donations included hundreds of jackets, sleeping bags, boxes of hand warmers and foot warmers, and blankets.
