On Sunday, state Rep. Katherine Rogers, D-Concord, died after a battle with cancer at the age of 67.
Rogers had served the public in a number of capacities over the years including one term as Merrimack County Attorney, as a city councilor and county commissioner.
Her friends and colleagues were quick to offer remembrances.
Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy, D-Manchester, issued the following statement in memoriam:
“Rep. Kathi Rogers was a fierce defender of those most vulnerable and a fearless voice for those who were disenfranchised. She was passionate in her work on behalf of women, children, and animals and was steadfast in her advocacy for a safer, more inclusive state.
“Kathi had an unfaltering sense of humor and always exhibited strength, courage, and bravery, right up until her passing. Her commitment to her Concord community, her advocacy, and her passion for justice and fairness will never be forgotten and will live on in all those whose lives she touched. The City of Concord, State of New Hampshire, and the Democratic Party lost a dear friend, and so did I,” Soucy said.
Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem, said:
“The Senate mourns the passing of Rep. Katherine Rogers. Her dedication to public service was only matched by her brave fight against cancer. She will be missed, but her legacy will surely live on.”
House Democratic Leader Rep. David E. Cote, D-Nashua, said,
“Kathi Rogers was the epitome of a conscientious public servant and an outstanding legislator, whose devotion to duty was second to none. I knew her for forty years and admired greatly her keen intellect and fearless commitment to the public interest. This commitment was such that she commanded the respect of all who knew her, irrespective of party affiliation or passing disagreement. She was a pillar of our Caucus, and she will be greatly and continuously missed.”
On Twitter, Rep. David Meuse, D-Portsmouth, called her “fiercely independent without an ounce of quit in her being.
“Rep. Kathi Rogers was a mentor for many, a tireless advocate for gun violence prevention, and led New Hampshire’s fight against animal cruelty. Her passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts.”
U. S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-NH, said “Rep. Rogers was a force to be reckoned with, championing the rights of all Granite Staters & working tirelessly for Concord & all of New Hampshire. My thoughts are with her loved ones today & all the people whose lives she improved through her service.”
And Melanie Levesque said on Twitter: “Rep. Katherine Rogers was an amazing legislator and friend. Her legacy will be long lasting. I am a better person for knowing her. There is good trouble to be had in heaven. I know Kathy is on it!”
