I muse joyfully that you are celebrating your Glamour Don’t Self during Covid. Should you not be familiar with a Glamour Don’t it’s a term used on the last page of Glamour magazines. This page is devoted to fashion that works: a Glamour DO or fashion that really does not: a Glamour DON’T.
And I’m here to let you know my Glamour Don’ts have been stellar during this pandemic. Yesterday I spotted socks with clogs and capris pants while walking with my daughter in Portsmouth. I am not quite sure what look I was going for: early 70s? Backwoods? Laundry folding fashion?
My footwear these days tend to be slippers, socks. I wear them with sweatpants or pajama bottoms. I’ve not put makeup on in months. It’s not a great look; cozy yes, but my eyes would have a black ban covering them should I be highlighted on the back page of Glamour. I am a major Don’t.
But I celebrate my don’ts these days – much to the chagrin of my 17-year-old daughter. I wear jackets over pajamas for quick jaunts – who am I going to see? I’m wearing a mask! It’s total Don’t time. I embrace the incognito.
I’m a fan of warm feet. Socks. I like clogs with socks – not nearly as trendy as Birkenstocks with socks – once a total Don’t but now the trend sported by teenagers and European men alike.
Pandemic fashion is all about the cozy, the mask. I’m thinking Unabomber, while he did not sport a mask, those sunglasses and hoodie celebrated anonymity, casual attire. Is that not the look these days?
Stilettos and belts seem so long ago, so ancient, so old school. Elasticity and ease of wear seem to make the most sense in Covid fashion. I may simply start wearing one of my husband’s flight suits – easy on, easy off – one zip.
Oh, joyful musers, do remember to have some fun and comfort these days. We won’t always get away with so much fleece, flannel, socks and clogs but we can now. We most certainly can. Embrace what is.
Celebrate the warmth of where you are. And if you’re a Glamour Don’t? Hey, celebrate. And who knows? Perhaps clogs and socks will be the trend of ‘21.
