U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, is continuing to push for passage of her legislation to combat gender-based pay discrimination. This as Equal Pay Day was observed Tuesday.

Proponents contend that women earn 79 per cent of male salaries in similar jobs. Sen. Ayotte has sponsored the Gender Advancement in Pay Act, or GAP, which she said is based on New Hampshire’s law.

Ayotte has collared four co-sponsors on her GAP legislation, which is similar to an amendment to Fair Pay Legislation, which has languished for years on Capitol Hill.
Her updated legislation this week calls for stronger provisions for salary transparency, and makes clear that employers cannot sidestep provisions that ban retaliation against employees who discuss their pay and prohibit pay secrecy policies.

And the state’s junior senator called on her colleagues to stop political posturing and using the equal pay issue as a political football.
