There was a distinct lack of interest in voting in the Presidential primary this morning at Keene State College, but as the snow stopped and the sun warmed the campus, students showed more enthusiasm.

I spent time today trying to find out if students were really going to show up at the polls and I am still at it. There have been forums on voting on campus and the college is providing shuttle service back and forth to the polling places.

Senior Rachel Moehlenhoff said she is going to make sure she gets to the polls to vote for her candidate, Donald Trump.

Matthew Epstein, though, said he “supports Donald Trump and Ted Cruze, but I am not voting today because I do not have time.”

Out-of-state students offered a mixed bag of responses when asked if they were going to vote. Emily Brochu and Samantha Sottile support Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, but are not registered to vote in Keene. They said they’d skip the primary and vote in the general election even though they could have registered at the polls.

At about 1 p.m., student enthusiasm was picking up.  Some students checked in with every passerby asking if he or she had voted.

Political signs line Appian Way, the central pedestrian area of campus. The Young Student Center was filled with brightly colored signs informing students of the shuttle schedule.

Jennifer Latvis, a 21-year-old senior, said she wasn’t going to miss out on this election even though she is not from New Hampshire. Latvis said she is “absolutely going to vote today.” She supports Marco Rubio.

Ashley Iannone, 22, another senior, said she is “not voting today because she does not believe in any of the candidates.”

Noelle Rossini is a senior at Keene State College who is interning this semester at InDepthNH.org. Rossini is an English literature and writing major from Boston. She is a member of the Keene State College Dance Team, which is ranked 9th in the nation. Next year, Rossini  plans to attend law school.
