Last March, Howard Altschiller, executive editor and general manager of the Seacoast Media Group, arranged a New Hampshire Press Association forum featuring speakers from the Union of Concerned Scientists.

What an eye-opener.

Dr. Brenda Ekwurzel, a senior climate scientist and the director of climate science at the Union of Concerned Scientists, and Roger W. Stephenson, the organization’s Northeast Regional Advocacy Director, made a strong case for increased reporting on climate issues.

And Stephenson has stepped up to the plate and agreed to write a New Hampshire-based column every month as part of his work with the Union of Concerned Scientists. It’s called Field of View: Climate Change Through a New Hampshire Lens and will launch Monday.

InDepthNH.org’s editorial cartoonist Mike Marland created the logo and InDepthNH.org agreed to host the columns on our website and distribute them to all media in the state for free as a public service.

We are running Stephenson’s inaugural column and several climate-related stories next week as part of Covering Climate Now, an unrelated weeklong event in which more than 170 media outlets around the country and world will publish climate stories.

The project was co-founded by the Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation, to increase news coverage of climate-related issues. InDepthNH.org is participating as a nonprofit news outlet and member of the Institute for Nonprofit News.

Over the next year, InDepthNH.org is committed to publishing stories about climate change and endangered species in New Hampshire written and researched by Paula Tracy, InDepthNH.org’s senior reporter. Paula recently reported on the little known White Mountain Fritillary butterfly.

How can you help? Let us know what you think should be covered. We work for you, New Hampshire.
