The House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday approved a bill that would establish a solid waste management fund using federal money to assist communities in diversion efforts.
Recognizing that other New England states are further along in addressing ways to reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills, New Hampshire’s Solid Waste Working Group met virtually with representatives from Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont on February 25 to hear what others in the region are doing.
When testifying in support of his bill to create a waste management fund, Sen. David Watters, D-Dover, referred to the “solid waste capacity crisis” in New Hampshire. According to a 2019 report by the Department of Environmental Services, landfills in the state will soon run out of capacity to take trash and other refuse.
David Watters, D-Dover, appeared before the Senate Ways and Means Committee to discuss his bill, which would establish a solid waste fund supported by a waste disposal surcharge.
The state Department of Environmental Services is moving forward with plans to realign its waste management efforts to focus on reducing the amount of trash that ends up in landfills.
The House approved bills to tighten voting restrictions, make it easier to sue public schools over bullying claims, and give gun owners greater leeway to display handguns.
