BERLIN – The Berlin police department is undertaking a review of the murder of Sandra Marisol Fuentes Huaracha, 25, by her husband Michael Gleason, 50, and his suicide July 6, because the department received a call two days before their deaths seeking a welfare check.

“We are reviewing our own practices and procedures to determine whether there are steps we can take to prevent such incidents from ever happening again,” the department said in a news release issued Thursday.

“Like the entire community we are saddened by the tragic loss of Ms. Fuentes Huaracha,” the release said. “On the morning of July 4 the caller reported that Mr. Gleason had made some concerning comments in reference to the well-being of Ms. Fuentes Huaracha and himself.”

The department is currently reviewing the call and conducting an internal investigation into the response and any other calls involving Ms. Fuentes Huaracha, the department said, adding the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has been notified. If anyone has any information related to this matter, they are asked to call Berlin Detective Lieutenant Wade Goulet at 603-752-3131.

A beloved member of the Berlin community, Fuentes Huaracha was found shot to death on the morning of July 6 inside the La Casita restaurant where she was manager, and Michael Gleason was found there too, having shot himself to death.

The Attorney General’s Office also put out a statement Thursday saying they are reviewing the case, including the Berlin police department’s internal review.

“The New Hampshire Department of Justice is treating the recent and tragic domestic violence-related homicide in Berlin with the utmost seriousness. We are actively gathering all relevant information, including monitoring the results of the Berlin Police Department’s ongoing internal investigation, and are working in close coordination with the New Hampshire State Police, the Coos County Attorney’s Office, and other appropriate partners to fully examine the circumstances of this case.

“The state’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, recently signed into law by Governor Ayotte, following a legislative initiative led by the New Hampshire Department of Justice, will ultimately review the findings of this case. Per statute, the committee will conduct a confidential, multidisciplinary review to identify opportunities for improvement and stronger coordination across systems in the future,” the attorney general’s release said.

Earlier this week New Hampshire Supreme Court Chief Justice Gordon J. MacDonald designated two judges to review the court record, and related matters, in the cases of State v. Michael Gleason, Jr. “The Judicial Branch will work with the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee to the extent the Committee examines the circumstances in these cases. Further information will be available following completion of the court system review,” the court statement said.

Soon after the murder/suicide, most of the criticism was focused on the court Magistrate who allowed Gleason to go free on $5,000 bail after being charged criminally with kidnapping, sexual assault and theft against Fuentes Huaracha in April. Two judges had also signed off on the bail amount.

A GoFundme page for Fuentes Huaracha had raised $10,005 Thursday night to send her “remains and belongings home to Mexico and support her grieving family in Mexico and the U.S.”
