In Wake of Supreme Court’s Ruling on Reproductive Rights, Senators Donna Soucy, Tom Sherman, and Becky Whitley Demand Repeal of Sununu’s Abortion Ban

CONCORD — Today, Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy, State Senator Tom Sherman, and State Senator Becky Whitley called on the Legislature to repeal Governor Sununu’s abortion ban following the Supreme Court’s decision to turn its back on 50 years of precedent and render reproductive rights meaningless in Texas.

In June, Sununu signed into law an abortion ban that includes no exceptions for rape or incest, felony penalties for doctors, and forced ultrasounds.

State Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy: “Governor Sununu signed an anti-choice budget into law, voted on the Executive Council to defund women’s health care services, and supported the justices responsible for this decision to dismantle Roe v. Wade and roll back reproductive rights. Reproductive freedom must always be protected in the Live Free or Die State, and the Supreme Court’s unwillingness to stand up for the reproductive rights of Granite Staters has only made the need all the more urgent to repeal Governor Sununu’s abortion ban.”

State Senator Tom Sherman: “It’s clear to me, my colleagues here today, and doctors and health care professionals across the state, that Governor Sununu and Republicans legislators are determined to fundamentally change the New Hampshire we all know — from a proud state that protects privacy and the right of people to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions — to a state that looks much more like Texas. We simply cannot allow that to happen, which is why we are demanding the full repeal of Governor Sununu’s abortion ban.”

State Senator Rebecca Whitley: “New Hampshire has a long and proud tradition of standing up for individual freedom from government overreach and of respect of our citizens to Live Free or Die. But the Republican majority and Governor Sununu abandoned that fundamental New Hampshire principle, but we are committed to take back our freedom and to protect the reproductive rights of all Granite Staters. In June, we warned that Governor Sununu’s abortion ban would lead to more attacks on the reproductive rights of Granite Staters. With the Supreme Court all but overturning Roe v. Wade, that day has arrived. If we truly believe in the right to reproductive freedom, then we must stand together and demand the immediate repeal of Governor Sununu’s abortion ban.”
