(Washington, DC) — Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement in response to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn pleading guilty for making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about his conversations with Russian officials:

“Michael Flynn’s guilty plea further underscores the significance of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” said Senator Shaheen. “I commend the Special Counsel for demonstrating to the American people, yet again, that the rule of law knows no bounds in our country. Our judiciary and democratic institutions remain strong, even in the face of a multi-pronged Kremlin attack during the 2016 presidential election. A year ago, I raised concerns with senior Trump administration officials about General Flynn, then President Trump’s National Security Advisor, and his interactions with foreign government officials. I will continue to defend the integrity of this investigation and will do all that I can to protect our country from foreign interference.”

Senator Shaheen sent a letter with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to US intelligence agencies in December 2016, asking for top intelligence officials to review Gen. Michael Flynn’s clearance. Earlier this year, the senators sent another request for a review of his clearance to Department of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo.
