Shaheen Statement on Reported House Tactics to Block Russia Sanctions Legislation

(Washington DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on reports that House Republican leadership is attempting to block the Russia sanctions legislation.

Sen. Shaheen was a key negotiator on the recent Russia sanctions amendment to Iran sanctions legislation that passed by the Senate last week with strong bipartisan support. The amendment would codify and strengthen existing sanctions, provide for a review mechanism, and impose new sanctions on key individuals, entities, and sectors of the Russian economy.

“The latest procedural roadblock cited by House Republicans is nothing short of a delay tactic that ignores the gravity of the Kremlin’s actions against the United States and against democracies worldwide,” said Senator Shaheen. “The Senate came together last week to send a resounding bipartisan message that, as Americans, we will not stand idly by as the Kremlin toys with our democratic institutions and values. House Republican leadership must pass the Russia sanctions amendment without delay or otherwise risk emboldening Putin’s regime.”
