Friday in Hampton: Marking Earth Day, Shaheen to Join Beach Cleanup and Highlight the Need for Action on Climate Change
**Earlier in Manchester, Shaheen will meet with two Special Immigrant Visa recipients to hear their stories of coming to the U.S.**
Ahead of Earth Day, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will visit Hampton Beach to discuss the need to address climate change and participate in a beach cleanup on Friday, April 21st at 2:00 p.m.
Shaheen is a strong supporter of initiatives to address climate change and invest in clean energy and energy efficiency. She has supported the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in New Hampshire and introduced legislation to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon pollution.
Shaheen has also been a strong proponent of the Paris climate agreement, participating in the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris as part of a congressional delegation.
Earlier in the day, Shaheen will meet with Abdul Hamid Samid and Rasil Ejam, two Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) recipients who now live with their families in New Hampshire at the International Institute of New England in Manchester at 11:45 a.m.
Samid worked with the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan and Ejam was an U.S. Army interpreter in Iraq. Both men received visas through programs that allow Afghans and Iraqis who supported the U.S. mission, and face threats as a result of their service, to apply for refuge in the United States. Shaheen has been a leader in the Senate alongside Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to extend the Afghan SIV program.
Earlier this year, Shaheen introduced bipartisan legislation to authorize an additional 2,500 SIVs, following news that the U.S. Embassy in Kabul officially stopped scheduling interviews for applicants seeking an SIV.
